Attosecond pulse generation and detection The conjecture of producing a train of attosecond pulses using high-order harmonic generation (HHG) has been put forward almost 10 years ago. More recently, detailed theoretical investigations have confirmed this possibility and shown that it is indeed conceivable to generate a train or even a single attosecond pulse.
In this report we discuss the generation of attosecond soft-x-ray pulses at Linac and Characterization of Attosecond Pulses from an X-Ray Free-Electron Laser.
For An attosecond is a millionth of a picosecond, or 10 −18 of a second. Light travels 0.3 nanometers in an attosecond, which is roughly the spacing between atoms in a solid. To put this another way – When atoms interact with strong laser fields, high-order harmonics are generated. In the time domain, this radiation consists of ultrashort "attosecond" light pulses with central photon energy in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) energy domain and duration of the order of 100 as. Together with the avoidance of the vacuum beam lines required for gas-phase HHG, solid-state attosecond technology could be applied more widely with simpler and more compact experimental setups.

In order to to do attosecond research we need record-breaking short laser pulses and make use of the pump-probe technique. We use two synchronised laser pulses with a precisely controlled time-delay to record movies of electrons in motion. Laser physics: Attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy accelerated Date: February 5, 2019 Source: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Summary: Laser physicists have succeeded in reducing the Impressive progress in laser technology (in terms of achievable pulse duration and intensity, wavelength tunability and repetition rate) and the introduction of novel experimental techniques (such as attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy, attosecond all-optical investigation methods, high-order harmonic spectroscopy, etc.) have opened the way to the investigation and control of ultrafast We use a train of sub-200 attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses with energies just above the ionization threshold in argon to create a train of temporally localized electron wave packets. We study the energy transfer from a strong infrared (IR) laser field to the ionized electrons as a function of the delay between the XUV and IR fields.
